Legend has it that the inventor of chess gave a copy of his game to King Midas. He gratefully told him to ask for whatever he wanted in return, imagining that he would ask for gold or precious stones.
The inventor asked for one grain of rice in the first box, two grains of rice in the second, 4 in the third,… and so on, doubling the number of grains of rice for each box. The King agreed without thinking about it. He did not consider what was in front of him.
